Elnathan was born in Rochester, Massachusetts, on 10 Jun 1732, the son of Ithamer Coombs [1] and Hannah Andrews. He died at Middleboro, MA on 4 Jan 1788.
He was living in Middleborough, Massachusetts, by 29 Nov 1759, when he married Mary Taylor of Dartmouth, Massachusetts.[2][3]
Mary Taylor was probably born at Little Compton, RI, on 8 Oct 1732, daughter of John Taylor and Joanna Wilbor.[4]
Elnathan received from his father’s estate seventy-five acres of land in Middleboro, half of his cedar swamp at the head of Snippatuit Pond in Rochester, and half of his reserve in the iron ore in Wareham. His father further directed that the sawing timber on the two lots was bequeathed in equal partnership with Elnathan’s brother, Caleb, and sister, Hannah Bishop.[5] In 1773, Elnathan of Middleboro and his brother Benjamin of Rochester, together with two others, purchased the land where their grist mill stood on the Black River, in the township of Rochester, MA.[6] Elnathan and his wife, Mary, sold lands in Middleboro in 1786.[7][8]
Military Service – Revolutionary War – Elnathan was a Sergeant, Capt. Joseph Perkins or Parker’s co., Col. John Cushing’s regt.; enlisted 21 Sep 1776; service, 1 mo. 29 days, at Rhode Island; also, Capt. Abishai Tinkham’s co., in a regiment commanded by Col. Ebenezer Sprout of Middleboro; service, 12 days on the alarm of 8 Dec 1776.[9] Sergeant, Capt. Abishai Tinkham’s co., Col. Ebenezer Sprout’s regt.; enlisted 6 May 1778; discharged 9 May 1778; service 3 days; company marched from Middleboro to Dartmouth on an alarm. Roll dated Middleboro.[10] Possibly, [Nathan] Private, Capt. Benjamin Lemont’s co., Col. Nathaniel Wade’s regt.; enlisted 25 Jun 1778; discharged 31 Dec 1778; service, 6 mos. 19 days, at Rhode Island; roll sworn to at Boston; also, same co. and regt.; muster roll dated Warwick, 7 Nov 1778; enlistment to expire 1 Jan 1779; also, same co. and regt.; muster rolls sworn to at East Greenwich, 13 Nov 1778, and 30 Dec 1778.[11] Sergeant, Capt. Abishai Tinkham’s co., Col. White’s regt.; entered service 1 Aug 1780; discharged 9 Aug 1780; service, 9 days, on an alarm at Rhode Island.[12]
Elnathan Combs of Middleborough, yeoman died intestate and on 3 March 1788, John Bishop of Middleborough was granted the administration of his estate.[14]
An inventory of his estate was taken 3 Mar 1788;[15][16]
In 1788, Ithamar Coombs of Middleborough was appointed guardian of his minor son, Asa Combs who was under the age of 14 years.[17] His children, Elnathan and Hannah, both above the age of 14 years, made the choice of Elisha Clarke of Middleborough to be their guardian.[18]
In 1790, his estate was set out to his children, Simeon Combs (eldest son), Stephen Combs, Ithamar Combs, Elnathan Combs, Asa Combs, Mary Pratt, wife of Job Pratt, and Hannah Combs.[19]
In 1797, Josiah Sampson of Barnstable was appointed guardian of his minor son Asa Combs, who was above the age of 14 years.[20]
