Biography

Charles Thomas Coombs was born 31 Oct 1834, the son of Joseph D. and Jane Preble Coombs.

The 1850 US census for Strong, Maine lists the residents of the household of Joseph D Coombes [sic] (59), a farmer, as Jane (56), Samuel C (22), a farmer, John (20), a shoe maker, Eliza A (18), a student, Charles (15), a student, George A (14), a student, and Asa (10), a student. Joseph owns real estate valued at $350.

The 1860 US census for Wilton, Maine conducted 5 Jul 1860 lists the members of the household of James [sic] D Coombs (70), born at Brunswick, Maine and a farmer, as Jane (66), born at Georgetown, Maine, Charles C [sic] (25) a farmer born at Minot, Maine, George A (23), a clergyman born at Strong, Maine, Alvira (21), a domestic born at Brunswick, Maine, and Asa (19), a farm laborer born at Strong, Maine. Joseph owns real estate valued at $2500 and has a personal estate worth $546.

  • Note: The Alvira [sic] Coombs listed is the daughter of Thomas Coombs and Rhoda Douglas. She married Charles four days after this census report was conducted.

Charles Thomas Coombs married Elvira Jane Coombs at Farmington, Maine on 9 Jul 1860. They were the parents of four known children:

  1. Charles Frank Coombs b. 13 Sep 1861 in Maine, d. 15 May 1917 at Chicago, Illinois;
  2. Edward Ernest Coombs b. 26 May 1869 at Des Moines, Iowa, d. 21 Feb 1942 at Excelsior Springs, Missouri;
  3. Arthur Henry Coombs b. 13 May 1872 in Kansas, d. 14 Jan 1936 at St. Louis, Missouri;
  4. George Albert Coombs b. 4 Jul 1875 at Abilene, Kansas.

The 1870 US census for Des Moines, Iowa conducted 16 Aug 1870 lists residents of the household of Charles T Coombs (35), a carpenter, as Elvira (32), Charles L (8), a student and Edwin E (1). Edwin was born in Iowa, the rest in Maine. Charles owns real estate valued at $3000 and has a personal estate valued at $500.

The 1880 US census for Abilene, Kansas conducted 22 Jun 1880 lists the residents of a home on 8th Street as Charles T Combs [sic] (43), a house carpenter, his wife Elvira (42), Frank C (18), a student, Edward E (11), a student, Arthur (8), a student and George A (4). The parents and Frank C were born in Maine, Edward in Iowa and both Arthur and George A in Kansas.

The 1900 US census for St. Louis, Missouri conducted 11 Jun 1900 lists the residents of 2201 Sidney Street as Charles T Combs [sic] (66), a carpenter and builder, and his wife Elvira (63). They rent their home and have been married for forty years. Elvira has given birth to five children, four living at the time of the census.

The 1910 US census for St, Louis, Missouri shows widower Charles S [sic] Coombs (75) residing at 2722 Oregon Avenue in the household of his son George (35), a street car conductor. Charles is not employed and it is noted that he has his own income. His son Arthur A (37), also widowed, also resides in the household; he is a moulder at a brass factory.

The 1920 US census for Kansas City, Missouri shows Charles T Coombs (85), widowed, born in Maine residing in the household of his son Edward E (50).
