Biography

Mary Olive Coombs was born in Brunswick, Maine, the daughter of Thomas Coombs and Rhoda Douglas. Mary Olive is named for a sister who died the same year she was born.

The 1850 US census report for Brunswick, Maine lists the residents of the household of Thomas Coombs (51), a farmer, as Rhoda (50), Judith (27), Ellen (20), Benjamin F (18), Rhoda E (11), Harriet (11), Elaine (17), Mary (14), Martha (8), Thomas A (6), and James Coffin (11). Ellen and the younger children all attended school within the past year.

She married James Henry Cox on 21 Jan 1859 at Brunswick, Maine. They were the parents of five known children, all born at Brunswick:

  1. George Herbert Cox b. 2 Feb 1862, d. 13 Apr 1910 @ Brunswick;
  2. Harriet 'Hattie' L Cox b. 27 Mar 1864, d. 18 Sep 1887 @ Durham, Maine;
  3. Winfield Scott Cox b. 9 Jan 1866, d. 1 Dec 1952 @ Los Angeles, California;
  4. Sarah Rowena Cox b. 29 Oct 1868, d. 28 Dec 1928 @ Durham, Maine;
  5. Howard T Cox b. 15 Jan 1871, d. 14 Feb 1897 @ Vergennes, Vermont.

The 1860 US census for Brunswick, Maine lists James H Cox (27), a farmer and Mary A [sic] (20). James owns real estate valued at $1600 and has a personal estate of $600.

The 1870 US census for Brunswick, Maine lists residents of the household of James H Cox (36), a farmer, Mary C [sic] (30), George H (8), Hattie C (6), Winfield L (4) and Sarah (1). George, Hattie, and Winfield attend school. James owns real estate valued at $2700 and has a personal estate of $730.

The 1880 US census for Brunswick, Maine lists resident James H Cox (48), a farmer, his wife Mary (40) and their children George H (17), works on farm, Harriet (15), at school, Winfield S (14), works on farm, Sarah (11) and Howard (9). The children all attended school within the past year.

Mary Olive died in 1890 and is buried at the Friends Cemetery, Durham, Maine.
