Biography

Joseph Coombs was born at Brunswick, ME, on 10 (Old Style) or 20 Mar 1752;[1] died at South Thomaston, ME, on 22 Nov 1817; married 6 Jun 1776 to Elizabeth GAMBLE at St. Georges (now Warren), ME, by Rev. John Urquhert.[2] Elizabeth was born at St. George on 11 Jun 1755, daughter of Archibald Gamble and Isabell Galloway, and she died 29 Dec 1845 at Thomaston, ME, age 90 years, 6 months and 7 days.[3][4] Joseph and Elizabeth had nine children.

– Revolutionary War – On 25 Jan 1854 Asa Coombs testified that Joseph “served at the Bagaduce (now Castine, ME, in 1779) expedition & in other service, that he acted as Sergeant” in Capt. Phillip Ulmer’s co., Col. Samuel McCobb’s regt.; Joseph was commissioned Ensign and Lieutenant. Based on this service Joseph was awarded a Revolutionary War Pension. Asa further stated that Elizabeth Gamble and Joseph Coombs were married on the 6th day of Jun 1776. After Joseph’s death on 22 November 1817, his widow, Elizabeth, continued to receive pension support. When Elizabeth died on 28 December 1845, her three surviving children petitioned to receive the pension payments. These children were Asa Coombs, Betsey Simmons and Nancy Fuller.[5]
