Biography

Hezekiah Coombs was born circa 1759; died 19 Jun 1830 or 4 Aug 1839[1]; his marriage (1st) intentions were published at Brunswick, ME, on 3 Oct 1778,[2] to Margaret EWING of Harpswell, and they were married 22 Oct 1778.[3] They resided in Lisbon, ME. Hezekiah's marriage (2nd) intentions were published at Lisbon on 26 Apr 1828 to Frances WARREN of Lisbon, ME,[4] and they were married on 15 May 1828, by Moses Tebbets Esq.[5] After Hezekiah’s death, Frances married (2nd) Samuel Bartol of Freeport, ME.[6]

From Ezekiel Thompson’s Day Book, “I hear that Lieutenant Hezekiah Coombs died last night, aged 71 years; he was born at New Meadows, ME. I well remember the worthy old gentleman. I remember to have seen him ride a young horse, trammeled, as they called it, with ropes, to learn him to pace, as was the old custom.”

Coombs, Hezekiah, Brunswick. Private, Capt. James Curtis's co.; muster roll dated Aug. 1, 1775, enlisted May 17, 1775; service, 3 mos.; also, Capt. James Curtis' co., Col James Cargill's regt.; enlisted Aug 9, 1775; service 5 mos. 5 days; also, Capt. Nehemiah Curtis's co., Col. Jonathan Mitchel's regt.; enlisted July 7, 1779; discharged Sept. 25, 1779; service 2 mos. 18 days, on Penobscot expedition; roll dated Harpswell and sworn to at North Yarmouth.[9] Private, Capt. Silas Wild’s co., Col. Edmund Phinney’s regt.; muster roll dated Garrison at Fort George, 8 Dec 1776; enlisted 10 Mar 1776; reported on command at Fort Edward.[10] Probably also Brunswick [Ezekiah Cumbs]. Private, Capt. Benjamin Parker’s (also given Capt. Benjamin Lemont’s) co., Col. Nathaniel Wade’s regt.; enlisted 25 Jun 1778; service, 2 mos. 6 days, at Rhode Island; enlistment, 6 months, to expire 1 Jan 1779; also, Capt. Lemont’s co., Col. Wade’s regt.; master roll dated East Greenwich, 17 Sep 1778; reported on furlough.[11]

Hezekiah Coombs' 11 Apr 1818 application for a pension [Maine 2753] states: filed at age 59, born at Brunswick, ME, but now of Lisbon, ME, served the first eight months service as a private in Capt. James Curtis’ co. from Apr 1775 to last of Dec 1775 and was verbally discharged at New Meadows 1 Jan 1776. Enlisted again 1 Apr 1776 to 1 Jan 1777 as private in Capt. Wilde’s co., Col. Phinney’s regt. MA troops and took an honorable verbal discharge at Fort George on Lake George 1 Jan 1777; service nine months. Enlisted again 1 Jul 1778, private upon continental establishment for six months Capt. Benjamin Lammont’s co., Col. Wade’s regt. MA Line; in the battle in RI under Gen. Sullivan; discharged verbally at Providence on 1 Jan 1779. The following is a schedule of my whole estate, clothing and bedding excepted: “one small barn upon land of another person of the value of ten dollars, one cow, and the half part of another cow of the value of twenty three dollars. One calf of the value of two dollars. Three swine of the value of seven dollars. Furniture besides necessary bedding of the value of ten dollars. One axe and hao of the value of one dollar & fifty cents. I have debts due to me that can be collected to the amount of twelve dollars, and I owe as much as forty three dollars. The income of the above property is not more than the interest of the money which I owe. I am by occupation a farmer, but from infirmity am unable to work. My family consists of myself, my wife Margaret aged sisty two years and has been unable to work for many years past and still so continues, my daughter Margaret aged twenty years.”[12] Hezekiah was awarded an annual pension of $96.

Frances Bartol’s (Hezekiah’s widow) application for a widow’s pension [W1124] and BLW [T19527-160-55] states: MA Line, soldier was b. in Brunswick MA (ME), soldier applied 11 Apr 1818 Lincoln County ME a resident of Lisbon, ME; soldier m. 2nd to Frances Warren of Lisbon ME on 15 May 1828 and soldier d. there 19 Jun 1830 and widow m. next to Samuel Bartol of Freeport in Cumberland County ME and he d. 22 Aug 1846 at Lisbon ME; widow applied 2 Mar 1853 Cumberland County ME aged 58, widow applied for BLW 9 May 1855 and a Daniel Bartol and David S. Cushing were witnesses to her affidavit.[13] Her pension certificate, was dated 2 Nov 1853, Number 2753.
