Biography

Mary was born about 1727 in Westchester County, New York Colony, probably in Rye, since that is where her father Hanness Coon, lived. She had at least 2 brothers, Jeremiah and Jacob, and another relative, possibly brother or nephew, named William.

Mary married John Rushton, also from Westchester, about 1751. They had at least 9 children: Jeremiah, John Jr., Sarah, Esther, Mary, Elizabeth, Peter, and Samuel. Mary and John, their children, and other friends and neighbors claimed to be eligible for land grants in Canada based on service to the Crown or property losses in the American Revolution. As yet there is no evidence as to what John did. Their son Jeremiah fought with the Westchester Refugees. I don't know if that service applied to the whole family, but they all arrived in Fort Cumberland, Nova Scotia, in 1783 or 1784. The Westchester Loyalists established their new homes in what they called Westchester also. Due to a logistical error, they did not apply and receive their claims until 1785.

Mary and John's land grant was 500 acres at the New Settlement on the Road leading from Cumberland to London-Derry, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia, next to Jeremiah's grant. Their son John Jr. and Mary's relative William Coon got a grant also.

Mary died on 18 January 1822 and is buried in the Rushton Pioneer Cemetery on Westchester Mountain. All the Rushtons in Cumberland County, and likely Nova Scotia, descend from John and Mary.
