Biography

Thomas Cooper is a part of US Black heritage.

Thomas was born about 1837 in Pennsylvania.

In 1860, he was living in Chester County, Pennsylvania with his wife, Anna, presumed son William, and a 35-year-old Black woman named Dylia Griffie.[1]

Military Service and Death

Private in Company B of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during the Civil War. He enlisted on 4 March 1863 from West Chester, Pennsylvania. He was 26 years old, married and working as a laborer when he enlisted. He was wounded in action on 18 July 1863 at Fort Wagner and again on 20 February 1864 at Olustee. He died of his wounds 1 March 1864 at the hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina.

He is buried at Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina.[2]
