Biography

William J. Cooper was born about 1842. He is the son of Frederick Cooper and Fanny Unknown.

The 1880 United States Census lists William as living in a household with his wife Susie and mother, Fanny. He is retired from the hotel business.

In 1887, William along with his cousin, Charles and his mother, Fanny, made a gift of one acre of land to the Board of School Directors in West Nottingham Township for the purpose of building a school.[1]

William's interest in philanthropy continued. In 1890 two newspaper articles describe William's gift of an original muster roll of the of Company D 12th Battallion Virginia Light Artillery to the State of Virginia Librarian for preservation.[2][3]

William passed away on 25 November 1896. He is interred in the family plot beside his parents, Frederick Cooper and Fanny Cooper, in Lancaster Cemetery in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.[4]
