Biography

Birth Nathan was born on April 1, 1854 in Leon, County, Texas. His mother was Nancy (Patterson) Cooper (abt.1831-)[1] and his father was Mark S. Cooper (abt.1826-abt.1856).[2]

Death of Father and Stepfather Nathan's father Mark Cooper passes away before 1860. His mother remarries James DeMoss of Lafayette County, Arkansas in 1862.[3] His step father passes away in 1870.

1870 Census After his step father's death the family is living in Austin, Travis County, Texas in the household of his uncle, Kenneth F Patterson with his mother and half brother. Nathan is listed as Nathan DeMoss. His occupation is a farm laborer.

1880 Census Living in Leon County, Texas with spouse, newborn daughter and three boys. Leon county is in east Texas around 80 miles east southeast of Waco and 125 miles southeast of Dallas. Nathan is a farmer. It's not clear why the three boys are living in the Cooper household. There is a large household of Lumas' in the previous listing on the census but additional research is needed to determine if and how they are related.
