Biography

Walter Cooper was a Pennsylvanian.

Walter, son of George Washington Cooper and Anna Mary "Annie" Taylor, was born 4 January 1895 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.[1][2][3][4] He grew up there, where in 1900 his father George Cooper (age 45) cultivated his own land to support his wife Annie Cooper (41, mother of six, three living), Walter Eugene (5), Gertrude May "Gertie" (11, servant) and George Washington (8).[1]

The family moved to Hellam Township, York County, before 1910, when the household included George W. Cooper (age 53, farmer), Annie (52, mother of eight, five living), Walter E. (15), Gertie (20), George W. (18), Mamie Ruth (4) and Amy G. (4).[5]

About 1917 he married Jennie Huggens,[2][6] daughter of Samuel Huggens and Lucy Ann Wildasin. They had at least two children:

When he registered for the draft in 1917. Walter was a married farmer.[2] At that time he was described as of medium height and build with blue eyes and brown hair.[2] The registration for World War II is more specific; it shows that at age 47 he was 5'8.5" tall, 205 lbs, with blue eyes, gray hair and a light complexion.[3]

Walter E. (age 25, farmer) and Jennie (22) owned their home on Manchester Road in Codorus Township that they shared with their one-year-old daughter Clarice in 1920.[15]

Before 1930 Walter E. Cooper (age 35, farmer) purchased a farm in Manheim Township, York County, where he lived with Jennie (33), Clarice (11) and Mary Mae (4).[6] Walter (age 45, farmer), Jennie (43) and Mary (14) remained in Manheim Township in 1940.[16] Walter and Jennie reported they had completed eight years of schooling.[16]

Walter died 19 January 1959 in Hanover, York County, and was buried at Saint Jacob's Stone Church Cemetery in Glenville, Codorus Township, York County.[4]
