Sarah Cooper was born in about 1808 in Layer de la Haye, Essex.
Sarah married William Adolphus Lamarque on 31 Aug 1830 in Abberton, Essex. Neither had been married before.
By March 30th 1851, William and Sarah were in Alderbury, Wiltshire (civil parish of Fisherton Anger). William was working as an inland revenue collector. They had six children - Frederick William (15 and born in Chelmsford), George James Louis (13 and born in Ipswich), Frank Vaudreuil (11 and born in Shadwell, London), Maria Louisa (7 and born in Stepney, London), Sarah Anna Maude (3 and born in Camberwell) and Harry Edward (11 months old and born in Fisherton Anger, Wiltshire). All of the children were learning at home. There was a nursery governess, Annis M Brown, who was 23 and from Bow in London; they also had a cook and a house servant, both from Wiltshire.
By April 2nd 1871, the family were in Stourmouth, Kent; Frederick was said to be the head of the household. William and Sarah, and three of their other children, Maria, Sarah and Harry, were in Frederick's household. There was one servant. Harry was working as a brewer's clerk; William was 65, and retired; and Frederick was a master brewer. Lamarque Brothers owned Stourmouth Brewery, and an 1874 advert of theirs read:
On 28 February 1874, William was listed as one of a very large number of partners (presumably stockholders) in the London Joint Stock Bank. His address was given as Stourmouth, near Wingham, Kent. His son Frank Vaudreuil, of Kingston upon Thames, was also a partner.[2]
By 28 Feb 1877, William had sold his shares in the London Joint Stock Bank, but Frank still held his, and was still living in Kingston on Thames.[3]
By April 3rd 1881, they were living at Cleavland, Hampton Rd, Teddington, Middlesex. William, at 75, was still said to be an inland revenue collector. Frederick, Frank, Maria, Sarah and Harry were all still single and in the household. There was also a grandson, Ernest Charles William Lamarque, aged 1 and born in Bearsted, Kent, and two servants. Frederick was working as a produce merchant; Frank was a bank manager; Harry was a bank clerk, and Maria and Sarah weren't in paid employment.
Willliam died on 30 Oct 1883 in Oak Bank, Godalming. He was buried on 2 Nov 1883 in Nightingale Cemetery, Godalming, in the consecrated section. His will was proved on 12 Dec 1883; his estate was worth about £8,800. He was said to be formerly of Fern Side, Teddington, Middlesex, but more recently of Oak Bank, Godalming. His executors were his sons William Frederick Lamarque (merchant of Oak Bank), George James Louis Lamarque (surveyor of taxes, of Nightingale Road, Godalming), Frank Vaudreuil Lamarque (bank manager of Chertsey) and Harry Edward Lamarque (merchant's clerk of Oak Bank).
Sarah died on 20 Dec 1888 at Oak Bank, Godalming, aged 80. She was buried on 24 Dec 1888 with her husband. She left about £460. Her son Frederick (of Oak Bank, secretary to a public company) was one of her executors.
