Ann (Cooper) Buck was born in Paddington, Middlesex, England.
Ann Cooper was born at 37 North Wharf Road, Paddington, London on April 1st 1853, the daughter of Charles Bristow Cooper, a canal boatman, and Sarah Crafts, his wife. She was baptised at St Mary's Church, Paddington on April 24th 1853. [1][2]
In 1861 Ann was living at 38 North Wharf Road, Paddington with her parents, seven of her siblings and a 16 year old lodger from Marylebone by the name of William Stevens. Her father and two eldest siblings, as well as the lodger, were all working as general labourers. [3]
Married Life
By 1871 Ann was living down the street at 9 Irongate Wharf Court with her "husband" William Buck, a labourer from Boxmoor, Hertfordshire. It should be noted here that despite the fact they claim to be married, they would not actually be wedded for another three years. [4]
Nevertheless, at St Barnabas' Church in Marylebone on Christmas Day 1874, Ann Cooper and William Buck did indeed marry. However, by this point they had already had two children, Sarah R Buck and William Buck. [5][6]
In 1881, Ann was recorded at 4 Grove Cottage, Marylebone living with her husband William, three of their children and four lodgers. Her husband was working as a labourer and Ann herself had taken up work as an ironer. [7]
A decade later, Ann, William and six of their children were living at the two roomed 50 Arthur Mews in Paddington. Her husband was the only person working, still a labourer. [8]
In 1901 Ann was living at the three roomed 31 Irongate Wharf Road, Paddington with her husband and six of their children. Like her husband, her three eldest children in the household were all working as labourers. [9]
In 1911, Ann was recorded at 29 Irongate Wharf Road and was living with her husband, three of her daughters and four granddaughters. Her husband was working as a carman for the Paddington Vestry (despite vestry councils officially having been abolished for 17 years as of 1911) whilst her daughter Nellie worked as an assistant to a draper and another one of their daughters, Ada, was working as a laundress. [10]
Death
Ann died at her home, 29 Irongate Wharf Road, on Friday, October 10th 1924. An inquest held by the deputy coroner for Marylebone on Wednesday, November 12th found Ann's death to be accidental after it was shown that she had fallen in her kitchen and fractured her thigh. [11]
