He was arrested and tried for 'burglariously entering' a shop at Bingham and stealing several (3) silver watches. He was committed to the County Jail on 23rd December 1817, and sentenced to life imprisonment on 13 March 1818. He arrived in Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land on 18 December 1818 abord the Lord Melville. This sentence was remitted, and instead sent to Newcastle per the brig Elizabeth Henrietta, arriving on 18 January 1822. He was in and out of trouble again until he married Mary Ann Morley, the eldest daughter of another convict, James Morley, on 20 May 1826. He fathered nine children, five of whom were still living at the time of his death at his daughter's home at Dawson Street, Newcastle. He is buried in the Christ Church Burial Grounds along with his wife Mary Ann, and at least three of his children.[1]
