A big fire was narrowly avoided here on New Years night. About 9 pm. alarm of a fire was given and it was found at the residence of Mr George Cooper junior, was in flames. About 100 persons gathered to the rescue, but by this time the fire was all over the walls and rushing through the roof. The lining was torn of the walls and buckets of water - which had to be carried from Little River, 100 yards distant were applied. It looked like total demolition of the premises was deserted. From enquires made it appears that Mr Coopers married daughter, Mrs Ryan fell asleep in one of the rooms leaving a candle burning. The table cloth caught fire and this was probably the origin of the outbreak.

Tragedy at Yeoval. Aged father saved by a limb of tree.

Flood waters swept down Sandy Creek at Yeoval Mrs Mary Jane Cooper age 76 and son Ronald age 30 were drowned. Her husband George aged 77 was caught in the swirling torrent and carried down stream but was saved by being caught in a tree. The body of Mrs Cooper was recovered about 250 yards away from her home, which was swept away by a wall of water. The body of her son has not yet been recovered. Mr and Mrs Cooper resided in a small house with their son Ronald on the town side of Sandy Creek Eight houses were wrecked and Yeoval is isolated.
The fatality occurred about 7.30 when Sandy Creek on which the home was situated came down with a terrific rush, taking everything before it. The Cooper residence its contents was totally destroyed, while two others situated near the creek suffered a similar fate. Mrs Cooper , her husband & son were up when the water swirled into the building . Mr Cooper grabbed his wife and for a time held her, but the torrent wrenched her from his grasp. Ronald Cooper tried to rescue her but his efforts were futile. The fact that Mr. Cooper senior was a strong swimmer helped to save his life. He was washed near a tree and managed to grasp it's branches and haul himself to comparative safety. He was rescued on the top of two trees. His wife's body was found 50 yards from where he was rescued. Ronald Cooper was a non swimmer and Mrs Cooper was helpless in the throes of the water, the police stated. Constable Honeysett stated that the water in Dandy Creek had gone down considerably but we are still searching for Ronald Cooper. The father said " I was with my son trying to escape, I could not help as the creek was running to fast.
