Anthony Cope Bt MP is Notable.

Anthony Cope, son of Sir John Cope and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Fane was born on 16 November 1632. [1] Baptised 6 December 1632, his Godparents were his grandmother Mary, Countess of Westmorland, uncle Mildmay, Earl of Westmorland and his other grandfather Sir William Cope but Sir Guy Palmes deputised for Sir William. [2] Anthony's father died in 1638 leaving the six-year-old as 4th Baronet of Hanwell. He was educated at Oriel College, Oxford. [3]

About 1652 he married Mary Gerard, daughter of Dutton 3rd Baron Gerard. [3] It has not yet been determined which of Dutton's wives was her mother. Mary bore him 3 sons and a daughter all of whom died in his lifetime. [3]

During the interregnum he employed Richard Allestree as his chaplain and in 1659 attracted the suspicious attention of a decaying regime. Anthony was first returned to Parliament in 1660 as member for Banbury. [3] This parliament, known as the Convention Parliament first met on the 25th of April, declared that Charles II had been the lawful King since his father's execution in 1649. It was dissolved by the restored monarch on the 29th of December. [4] The following year Anthony was returned to the Cavalier Parliament as member for Oxfordshire and was commissioned a Captain in Viscount Falkland's regiment of Foot garrisoning Dunkirk. [5][6]

Ever an Anglican he led, together with Sir John Packington, the great pope-burning procession in November 1673, on the anniversary of the Gunpowder plot. Anthony died on the 11th of June 1675 and was buried at Hanwell. [3] Having no son to succeed him his baronetage passed to his brother, John.
