Biography

Mary Cope was born on October 4, 1827, in Hatherton, Cheshire, England to Samuel and Anne Cope. She immigrated to the United States with her parents and siblings in 1840; they settled in Iowa. She married Samuel Williamson on May 3, 1845, in Lee County, Iowa and they had one son and three daughters between 1845 and 1860. Samuel died in 1860, leaving Mary a young widow of 33 years of age with several children. She and her older daughter Sarah BOTH married Shepherd Pierce Hutchings, a leader of the Mormon church, on July 29, 1861, in Naples, Illinois. (I found this note in a file from my aunt, Nona Ratcliffe Litchfield: "Mary Cope Williamson was sealed to Sheperd Pierce Hutchings as wife #4. Sarah Ann Williamson daughter of Mary Cope Williamson and Samuel Williamson was sealed to Shepherd Pierce Hutchings as wife #1). Shepherd had already been married to his second wife, Eliza Ann, for many years (he divorced his first wife). Apparently Shepherd was very ill at the time. Eliza Ann taught Mary and her daughter Sarah to weave. They also made brooms, baskets, and tallow candles, braided straw and made hats, all to sell [1]. In this way they kept the family living until Shepherd's health improved, which was about seven years later. Mary died on January 23, 1902, in London, London, at the age of 74. At this time it is not known whether she returned to England before or after the death of Shephert Pierce Hutchings in 1895.

Mary Cope married her first husband, Samuel Williamson, on May 3, 1845, in Lee County, Iowa and they had one son and three daughters between 1845 and 1860. Samuel died in 1860, leaving Mary a young widow of 33 years of age with three children. She and her daughter Sarah BOTH married Shepherd Pierce Hutchings on July 29, 1861, in Naples, Illinois. (I found this note in a file compiled by my aunt, Nona Ratcliffe Litchfield: "Mary Cope Williamson was sealed to Sheperd Pierce Hutchings as wife #4 Sarah Ann williamson daughter of Mary Cope Williamson and Samuel Williamson was sealed to Shepherd Pierce Hutchings as wife #1).Shepard had already been married to his second wife, Eliza Ann, for many years (he divorced his first wife). Apparently Sheperd was very ill at the time.

This part is from a biography of Shepard Pierce Hutchings ( (http://www.eng.utah.edu/~kmonson/FamHist/Durney/SPH.html)) Eliza Ann taught Mary and her daughter Sarah to weave. They also made brooms, baskets, and tallow candles, braided straw and made hats, all to sell. In this way they kept the family living until Shepherd's health improved, which was about seven years later.

Mary died on January 23, 1902, in London, London, at the age of 74. I have found no records of her leaving America and can only guess that life was so miserable as a fourth wife that she fled and returned to her birthplace.
