John was a German miner who was born about 1840 in Germany. He was married to Catherine Oaks who was also a German immigrant. Together they had 10 children.
On 16 Jun 1890 he was working in the Hill Farm Mine in Dunbar, Pennsylvania when an explosion occurred. John was killed along with his son, Andrew Cope.
