Biography

Verda was born on September 3, 1911at Sunbright in Morgan County, Tennessee. He was the son of Jessie Andrew Cope and Lola Alberta ( Couch ) Cope. Verda was a twin to his sister Lena Cope. He married Geneva West on April 6, 1935 in Scott County, Tennessee. Verda passed away on Friday, April 6, 1984 at home in Oneida in Scott County.

Verda Cope, Sr., 72, of the Oak Grove community, Oneida, passed away suddenly Friday morning, April 6, 1984, at his home. He was the father of former Scott County Judge Verda Cope, Jr. Mr. Cope, who was born in Sunbright, was the son of the late Rev. J. A. Cope, and the late Lola A Couch Cope and was also preceded in death by three sisters; and six brothers. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Robbins, and sang with the Jubilee Quartet for many years. He is survived by his wife, Geneva West Cope of Oneida; one daughter, Mrs. Ben Bailey (Joyce) Bowling of Oneida; one son, Verda (Buddy) Cope, Jr. of Robbins; five granddaughters: Marcia Elaine Bowling of Oneida, Karen Ann Cope and Sabra Renee Cope, both of Robbins, Lee Ann Bowling of Oneida, and Ketruah Shay Cope of Robbins; one grandson, Eric Durand Cope of Robbins; two sisters: Lena Cope of Robbins, and Linnie Boone of Covington, Ky.; several nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 8, at the West-Murley Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Hubert Terry and Rev. Carl Jeffers officiating. The Bethlehem Baptist Church Choir sang. Burial was in the Robbins Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Dan Carson, Claude Duncan, Ricky Duncan, Ervin Jeffers, Ray Shoemaker, and Claude Terry, Jr. West-Murley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
