Biography

Matthew was born about 1843 to William Cope

The March 1851 census[1]shows Matthew residing with his family in High Street, Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales, United Kingdom.

The April 1861 census[2]shows Matthew residing with his family in Bute Crescent, Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales.

Matthew, a Coal Merchant, married[3]Margaret Cope on 19 May 1869 at St. John's Church, Maindee, Monmouthshire. At the time of the ceremony Matthew was residing in Cardiff and Margaret Cope was residing in Maindee. His father William Cope is noted as a Colliery Proprietor and his father in law John Harrison works as a Farmer. The marriage was registered[4]during the second quarter of 1869 in the district of Newport.

The April 1871 census[5]shows Matthew, aged twenty eight, a Coal Agent who is married, along with his wife Margaret Cope and seven month old son William Cope visiting Nelson Hewertson, a Timber Merchant and Wood Turner who employs three hundred and fifty seven men and boys at Sunnybank Villa, Christchurch, Monmouthshire.

The April 1881 census[6]shows Matthew residing with his family at Quarry Hill, St. Mellons, Monmouthshire.

The 1881 to 1888 Monmouthshire, Wales Electoral Registers[7][8][9][10]shows Matthew continuing to reside at Quarry Hill, St. Mellons.

The April 1891 census[11]shows Matthew continuing to reside with his family at Quarry Hill, St. Mellons.

At the time of his son William Cope's marriage[12]to Helen Cope on 5 September 1900 in the parish of Willington, Somerset, England Matthew continued to reside in St. Mellons and is noted as a Gentleman.

The March 1901 census[13]shows Matthew continuing to reside with his family at Quarry Hill, St. Mellons.

The April 1911 census[14]shows Matthew continuing to reside with his family in a twelve roomed property at Quarry Hill, St. Mellons.

Matthew passed away[15]aged ninety at his home in Quarry Hill, St. Mellons on 8 November 1933. His passing was registered[16][17]during the fourth quarter of 1933 in the district of Newport. Matthew was laid to rest[18]a few days later on 11 November 1933 in the parish of St. Mellons. Matthew's probate[19][20]was administered in London, England six weeks later on 22 January 1934 detailing effects of £67,106 1s 2d to his son Sir William Cope, 1st Baronet.
