Matthew, a Coal Merchant, married[3]Margaret Cope on 19 May 1869 at St. John's Church, Maindee, Monmouthshire. At the time of the ceremony Matthew was residing in Cardiff and Margaret Cope was residing in Maindee. His father William Cope is noted as a Colliery Proprietor and his father in law John Harrison works as a Farmer. The marriage was registered[4]during the second quarter of 1869 in the district of Newport.

The April 1911 census[14]shows Matthew continuing to reside with his family in a twelve roomed property at Quarry Hill, St. Mellons.
Matthew passed away[15]aged ninety at his home in Quarry Hill, St. Mellons on 8 November 1933. His passing was registered[16][17]during the fourth quarter of 1933 in the district of Newport. Matthew was laid to rest[18]a few days later on 11 November 1933 in the parish of St. Mellons. Matthew's probate[19][20]was administered in London, England six weeks later on 22 January 1934 detailing effects of £67,106 1s 2d to his son Sir William Cope, 1st Baronet.
