Arthur Stockdale Cope was a portrait artist who was known to paint important public figures and members of English royal family.

He was born in November 1857, Kensington London, United Kingdom.^[1] He was the son of Charles Cope and Ann Benning. After attending Norwich Grammer School he embarked on training to be an Artist like his father. First at Carey's Art School, then, from 1874 at the Royal Academy Schools. He was only 19 when he first exhibited at the Royal Academy London, England, United Kingdom. In 1888 he teamed up with a close friend Herbert Harrington Roberts to open a new Art School in Kensington London, England, United Kingdom. He became a sought after Portraitist. Arthur painted many portraits of public and also royal figures. Among the royal figures were Princess Beatrice, Edward Vll, George V and Edward Vlll. The family lived in Little Campden House in Kensington from 1893 - 1927. Over the years he became a prominent figure in the Art world: a Fellow of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters from 1900 and a Royal Academician from 1910. Arthur painted the programme for the 1908 London Olympics.

In 1927 Arthur was appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. In 1933 he became a Senior Royal Academician.

Arthur married Emily Beatrix Hawtayne in September 1882 at Wandsworth London, England, United Kingdom.^[2] The couple had 3 children that are known of.

Arthur died on the 5 July 1940 at his country house, Treniffle at Lawhitton near Launceston in Cornwall England, United Kingdom. ^[3]He was buried at Brookwood Cemetery, Brookwood Woking Borough Surrey England, United Kingdom.^[4]
