Biography

James Cope (1784-1857)'s father was William Cope, Jr. (1753 - 1813) and his mother was Sarah Holland (1760 - 1830)

William Cope Jr.'s parents were William Cope (1719-1813) and Phoebe Ellsworth (1723-1818).

Birth

Marriage

Many unsourced trees and online databases identify his wife as Sarah Holland, who is identified as Sarah Cope in her father's will made in 1802 in Grayson County, Virginia.[1] Sarah is also identified on her modern gravestone in Warren County, Tennessee, as the "mother of James Cope."[2]

Although the original source for the claim that William was the husband of Sarah Holland is unknown, there is a William Cope who appears on the tax lists for Lee County, Virginia, in 1795 and 1796, in the same area further west from Grayson County, where Jeremiah Hatfield also appears. Jeremiah is identified by many researchers as the husband of Sarah's sister Fanny (Holland) Hatfield.[3] Thus, it seems likely that both Sarah Cope and her sister Fanny Hatfield were living with these husbands in Lee County, Virginia, by 1796.

Children

William Cope and Sarah Holland reportedly had at least two children: James Bradley Cope and Sarah Cope.[citation needed]

Death

William Cope reportedly died in about 1813.[citation needed]

Cope-902 and Cope-373 appear to represent the same person because: These men are both named William Cope and attached to the same spouse, so either they are duplicates or Cope-902 needs to be detached as a spouse of Sarah Holland (Holland-1672)

Cope-902 and Cope-373 do not represent the same person because: They both have same name and are attached to the same wife, so are either duplicates or one needs to be detached

This William Cope Jr could not be the son of William Cope, Sr and Phoebe Ellsworth. After coming to the "New World" (William Cope, Sr.), neither he, his parents, nor children ever lived anywhere but Pennsylvania, New York, and Canada.
