James Cope (1784-1857)'s father was William Cope, Jr. (1753 - 1813) and his mother was Sarah Holland (1760 - 1830)
William Cope Jr.'s parents were William Cope (1719-1813) and Phoebe Ellsworth (1723-1818).
Many unsourced trees and online databases identify his wife as Sarah Holland, who is identified as Sarah Cope in her father's will made in 1802 in Grayson County, Virginia.[1] Sarah is also identified on her modern gravestone in Warren County, Tennessee, as the "mother of James Cope."[2]
Although the original source for the claim that William was the husband of Sarah Holland is unknown, there is a William Cope who appears on the tax lists for Lee County, Virginia, in 1795 and 1796, in the same area further west from Grayson County, where Jeremiah Hatfield also appears. Jeremiah is identified by many researchers as the husband of Sarah's sister Fanny (Holland) Hatfield.[3] Thus, it seems likely that both Sarah Cope and her sister Fanny Hatfield were living with these husbands in Lee County, Virginia, by 1796.
William Cope and Sarah Holland reportedly had at least two children: James Bradley Cope and Sarah Cope.[citation needed]
William Cope reportedly died in about 1813.[citation needed]
