Biography

Samuel Copestick, son of Joseph Copestick and his wife, Sarah Griffiths, was born in 1849 at Newcastle under Lyme in Staffordshire [1] and was baptised at St Giles on the 11th of February. [2] His father, Joseph, whose family name was spelled variously as Copestick or Copestake, worked in the pottery industry, in 1851 providing a home for his family in Stoke on Trent where he made saucers. [3] By 1861 they had moved to Longton and thirteen year old Samuel was in work as a mould maker. Two sisters, Eliza 14 and Mary Ann only 11, were working as painters. [4]

At Congleton in Cheshire in 1869 Samuel married Ann Birtles. [5] He had changed, or was about to change, his trade becoming a hairdresser and settling with Anne and their daughter, Gertrude, at Leeds in Yorkshire. [6] [7][8]

In 1899 his daughter, Gertrude, married Edward Anderson Hindle. [9] By 1901 Anne was living with Edward and Gertrude while Samuel was living alone at Templenewsam. [10]

Samuel died in 1904 and was buried at the Becket St Cemetery in Leeds on the 16th of April. [11]
