Butcher Fined
Unlawfully Hawked Meat
Nelson George Copley butcher, of Anzac Highway, Plymton, pleaded guilty by letter in No. 2 Adelaide Police Court this morning to a charge of having unlawfully hawked meat on April 19 within the Metropolitan Abattoirs area at Clarence Park; Westbourne Park, and Cottonville. Mr. H. M. Muirhead, S.M., imposed a fine of £3 with £3 2/ costs. John O. Pywell, inspector of the Metropolitan Abattoirs Board, told the court that he and Inspector McGowan had followed defendant, who drove a butcher's cart. He was seen to come from a house, cut meat, weigh it, and hand it to a woman. [5]
He was also a well known race horse trainer in Adelaide as indicated by this article from the Sydney "Referee" on Thursday 11th February 1937.
Nelson's Great Day
This is not a story concerning Admiral Lord Nelson, but is directed to Nelson Copley, a South Australian trainer, who has had a slice of luck with a two-year-old named Sweet Malfi, who has just won two races for him. It was his intention immediately to turn the filly out, but on second thought a vision of the Port Adelaide Sires Produce Stakes came to him. Nelson trained for Mr. Bert Just, and for that owner he narrowly missed winning the last Goodwood Handicap with Anton Hill. Copley won races in Adelaide with Lord Carrington. Mr. Just promised to buy him a yearling, and the selection was the filly sister to Saxon Prince. He gave Copley the option of leasing the filly, now known as Sweet Malfi, with a right to purchase if she made good. [6]
Nelson George Copley died on 3rd October 1946 at Edwardstown, South Australia, Australia. [7][8] His death notice appeared in "The Advertiser" on Friday 4th October 1946.
