Biography

First wife was Catherine Purcell, who was the mother of his children.

Sheriff of Yorkshire Feb-Nov 1678.

MP for Aldborough, later for Thirsk.

At his death in 1709, he provided a bequest of 100 pounds to the Royal Society for funding the Copley Medal, now Britain's oldest scientific honour.
