Biography
Johann was born in 1735 in Germany, possibly in Bayern.[1] He passed away in 1807 in Rowan, North Carolina.[2]
According to the dates and locations of the births of his children, NIcolas came to colonial America sometime between 1759 and 1762. However, he cannot be found in the Maryland Colonial Census of 1776.
By 1790, Nicholas was in Frederick, Maryland.[3] In the house hold are reported 2 free white males over 16, one free white male under 16 and 4 free white females.
Nicholas's probate files includes a will dated 15 December 1807,[2] so he likely died sometime after, not on that exact day.
Mentioned in his will were his sons Nicholas Copple and Philip Copple as executors, daughters Mary Fox and Barbary Maner, sons Jacob Copple and William Copple and his grandchidlren by William: Philip Copple and Susanna Lambeth. Also mentoned as receiving an equal share of his estate are the heirs of Christina Young, but he does not indicate her relationship. It is likely she is a daughter who is deceased. No wife is listed, so she must have pre-deceased him.
Research Notes
There appear to be two men named Johann Nicolas Keppel, this one who was born in 1735 in Bayern and the other who was born in 1724 in Helbetzheim, Alsace. The two have been conflated in various online trees
This Nicholas went by Copple and settled first in Maryland and then died in North Carolina.
The other went by Nicholas Keppel and settled in Pennsylvania, married Maria Williams and died there in 1804. His father was Johann Michael Köppel (1697-1764), who had previously been attached to this profile.
It is also possible that the two men's wives have goten mixed up. Some sources cite a marriage date of this Nicolas to Anna Maria WIlhelm on 28 September 1851 in Bedminster, Bucks, Pennsylvania while the other NIcholas is recorded as marrying Maria Williams on 28 September 1856 in Tohickon, Bedminster, Bucks, Pennsylvania.[4]. There are a number of duplicate profiles which have various versions of this information. While it is entirely possible that one man married Anna Maria Williams and the other married Maria Anna Wllhelm, it is unlikely they were married on the same day in a different year in the same place.
This NIcholas had children born whose birth dates are reported as being between 1853 and 1857 in Germany, so if this couple married, it was not in Pennsylvania.
There is no clear indication who Nicolas Copple's wife was, she has been left attached here until more evidence can be found to support it. Patterson-15268
