Biography

Jane or Joan Corbet was the daughter of Roger Corbet, Knt., of Moreton Corbet, Shropshire, and Elizabeth Hopton, daughter of Thomas Hopton, Knt., of Staunton-on-Arrow, Herefordshire.[1][2] Her date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated.

Jane married first to John Twynyho, Burgess of Plympton, before 13 August 1464.[1] [3] They had one son.

She married second, date and place unknown, to Thomas Cressett, Esq., of Upton Cressett, Shropshire, etc., son and heir of Robert Cressett, Esq., Sheriff of Shropshire, and Christian Stapleton.[2] They had two sons and four daughters.

Jane Corbet predeceased her husband, as he remarried to Eleanor ______,[2] date and place unknown.

According to a summary of the will of Thomas Cressett dated 20 Aug, 12 Henry VIII[4] it referred to his daughter Anne, wife of Lawrence Ludlow; his daughter Mary, widow of John Lawley (deceased); his son and heir Richard Cressett and Richard's wife Jane Wrottesley.

Research Notes

Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry listed the following four daughters of Jane and Thomas Cresset: Cecily, wife of Thomas Leighton; Thomasine, wife of Richard Draper; Elizabeth, wife of Adam Lutley; and Jane, wife of Thomas Whitton. [2] Richardson amended this list in his more recent version of Royal Ancestry, and that more recent list is given in the profile above. Stevens-17832 14:13, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

Magna Carta Project

This profile was reviewed/approved for the Magna Carta project by Michael Cayley on 28 May 2020.
Jane (Corbet) Cressett appears in Magna Carta Ancestry in a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway Ancestor Richard More, to Magna Carta Surety Baron William de Mowbray (vol. III, pages 173-175 MORE). This trail was developed by the Magna Carta project in February 2020 by Thiessen-117 and was reviewed/approved/badged 28 May 2020. Also at this time, other badged trails were identified by the Project from More to surety barons Gilbert de Clare, Richard de Clare, John de Lacy, Saher de Quincy, Hugh le Bigod and Roger le Bigod. All of these trails are set out in the Magna Carta Trails section of Katherine More's profile.
See Base Camp for more information about Magna Carta trails. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

I have removed a daughter Mary Cresset who was added with no sources provided to connect her to this family.

We've been working on this family & Richardson lists her as a daughter of Thomas & his wife Jane/Joan Corbet. Also, Steve Hunt found a summary of his will, which names daughter Mary, widow of John Lawley (also Anne, wife of Lawrence Ludlow and son and heir Richard Cressett and Richard's wife Jane Wrottesley).

Also, while Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry lists his daughters as shown in this profile (Cecily, wife of Thomas Leighton; Thomasine, wife of Richard Draper; Elizabeth, wife of Adam Lutley; and Jane, wife of Thomas Whitton), Royal Ancestry (IV, pages 146-147 MORE 10) has a different list:

  • Jane Cressett, married Henry Eyton
  • Anne Cressett, married Lawrence Ludlow, Esq.
  • Mary Cressett, married John Lawley
  • Elizabeth Cressett, married Humphrey Onslow, Esq.

Thanks Liz. I've edited the list of children, added a research note, and reattached Mary as their daughter. Would you go ahead and add a citation for Thomas's will which names some of his daughters? Thanks,

Jen

Hi, Her mother, Elizabeth, born in 1427, would have been 3 when she gave birth to Jane Cressett.
