Biography

Family records suggest DoB is 15 Dec 1853, at Burley, Lancaster, England, however there is a birth index Q4, 1952 (Salford District, parents not listed), and a baptism found for 30 Jan 1853 (Pendalton, Eccles), parents James and Alice.

Died 01 May 1910, buried 03 May 1910 Okato Protestant Blk 0, Plot 167 [headstone FindAGrave 185753772]

CAUTION: George has an uncle, also named George (1831-1903), and a cousin named George Seymour (1869-1938). These three men are frequently mixed up in family trees

George married on 26 Feb 1880 ref 3109 to Roebuck, Fanny Susan born 11 Jan 1861 ref 9661 (poss 01 Nov 1861), index on file Castlemaine, Aus, died 07 Feb 1931, age 71. bd. 09 Feb 1910 Okato, Protestant Blk 0, Plot 167 [FG185753855].

Fanny is d/o Stephen Johnson Roebuck b. 1828, d. 23 Jan 1865, [FG 185754116] buried at Te Henui, New Plymouth, and Mary Ann Saint b. 1818, d. 11 Sep 1904 [FG185754000], buried Okato. Stephen died from a gunshot wound at Matataiwa stockade, North Taranaki. He arrived with a large contingent of militia from Melbourne to fight in the land wars. He enlisted under the name of Frank Johnson, apparently due to trouble with the law in Bendigo. On the arrival of his children from Australia he reverted to his real name. He was in a tent at the Matataiwa redoubt when he was shot dead by a fellow soldier named John Harris.

George and Fanny lived in Saunders Rd, Okato before moving to Kohuratahi-Toko area. Ten Children (Some bios state 11 children – still looking for the last one): 1 CORBETT, Robert Stephen was born on 18 Dec 1881/17661 in New Plymouth, died on 01 Oct 1918 in France (Ist World War) at age 36, and was buried in France - Ribecourt Road Cemetery, Trescault. 2 CORBETT, Ethel May b. 12 Mar 1882/6017 m. 1906/4469 Smith, Joseph 3 CORBETT, Frances Mary 08 Jan 1884/1463 m. 1905/5676 Roberts, Oliver 4 CORBETT, Ivy Jean 22 Apr 1885/5860 m. 1910/607 to McCartie, Charles Robert. Children: McCartie, Lois Jean 1913/22999 McCartie, Ailsa Rae “Dimpy”, b 1915/13458, d. 1986 (car accident). Ailsa had a son out of wedlock. “Rusty” was born in 1935 (no bdm records, father unknown). Ivy and Robert adopted Rusty. Dimpy’s grandson, Jon Mac (born 1972), is looking for his birth grandfather, he is a dna match to Don, but not Tony. 5. CORBETT, Florence Julia 16 Jul 1889/8138 m. 1907/583 Cooper, Bertram Edward 6 CORBETT, Winifred Alice, b 18 Oct 1890/4875, d 29 Nov 1977/48115, m 29 Jul 1915/3260 to O’Connor, William Oscar 7 CORBETT, Jessie Mabel 17 Nov 1893 1894/4554 m. 1914/6837 Hart, John 8 CORBETT, Frank 30 Sep 1898/10727 9 CORBETT, Leonard Charles 23 Jul 1900/11167 m. 1929/1764 Bottcher, Maud Alice 10 CORBETT, Bernard Samuel 28 Nov 1903 1904/5573 m. 1934/9835 Nairn, Margaret Jean
