James was born in Belfast, Antrim Co, Ireland about 1885 to Alexander Corbett and Elizabeth (Strain) Corbett.

In 1901 he was living with his sister Jane and extended family in Belfast, where he worked as a hackle maker.

James married Mary Ann Watson at the Church of St. James in Belfast in the summer of 1908.
