Passing of a Pioneer. Mr. Saint George Corby.[2]
Mr. Saint George Corby, of "Willow Gum Hill," Rosslyn, passed away suddenly on Wed nesday last at his home. Mr. Neil Sinclair, the Rosslyn—Wowagin mailman, called at his home and found the old man, had passed away. We understand that the old gentle man apparently collapsed and fell from his chair to the floor. The Taralga Police were notified and Const. Hawkins proceeded to the scene. The Crookwell doctor, who had been treating the late Mr. Corby, was called and certified death as due to natural causes. Mr. Corby's death removes one of the last links of the pioneer families of this district. In 1922 a public luncheon was tendered to 40 pioneers, and of this honoured company Mr. Corby was the last to go. He reached the great age of 95 years last March — a truly wonderful age.
The late Mr. Corby lived in the Taralga district all his life, where he had pursued grazing and farming Interests. He married a local girl, Miss H. Nash, who survives him. The late Mr. St. George Corby's funeral took place on Saturday last at 11 a.m. after a Mass in Christ the King Church for the repose of his soul. The Rev. Father McGilv-ray conducted the service. The cortege, which was a very large and representative one, then moved to the Stonequarry Cemetery, where interment took place, Rev. Father McGilvray officiating at the graveside. The funeral arrangements were most efficiently and reverently carried out by Mr J. P. Fitzgibbon of Taralga. The late Mr Corby is survived by his wife, Mary Anne (nee Nash), four sons and four daughters (one daughter pre deceased him many years ago). They are Lena (Mrs J. S. Keough, Golspie), Christina (Mrs Spicer, Wollongong), Florence (Mrs Bert Leary, Crookwell), Elsie, (Mrs Jack Mullins, Roslyn) , and Walter, : Les, Albert and Arthur, all of whom reside in the district. The many floral tributes, telegrams and letters of condolence bare eloquent testimony to the high esteem in which this grand old pioneer was held. Our sympathy goes out to the family of the deceased who have always played such an important part in their district.
