Biography

Alexander M. Corley, was almost always referred to as Alex. Later Corley descendants carry the name Alexander McKenzie Corley indicating this Alex's middle name may also be McKenzie.

Alex M Corley was born 6 Nov 1865.[1] He was the grandson of Pink Lowe, father of Harriet Lowe, and resided in his household when the 1870 census was enumerated.[2] Alex was the son of John B. Corley and was living with his grandparents and father in 1880.[3] This record is somewhat misleading. It looks as though Alex and Dessie could be the children of J.J & E, but this seems highly unlikely. We know from other documents that Alex was son of J. B. and that Dessie was a granddaughter of J.J., daughter of J.J.'s son, Joseph.

It is implied that Alex was not living in Nashville in 1888. Manoah Dallas Taylor filed against Representatives of J. B. Carley, deceased, in Chancery court at Nashville. "It appearing from affidavit filed in this cause that the defendants Mollie McConnell and husband, F. W. McConell, John G. Carley and Alexander M. Carley, are non-residents of the the state of Tennessee ..."[4] Perhaps, he had gone to stay with his brother John G. in Virginia.

Alex was named in the distribution of his father's estate in 1892[5] and his grandfather's estate in 1695, although he was at that date deceased.[6]

Alex didn't marry and died at a young age of consumption, which was quite virulent in Nashville during the late 1800s. He died 20 Mar 1893, in Nashville, and was buried at Mt. Olivet on the 22nd[1][7][8][9]

"Died of Consumption. Alex. Corley, a well-known young man, died suddenly Monday night at his boarding-house on South Market street of consumption. The remains were carried to the home of Mr. Corley's brother, L. B. Corley, on the Lebanon pike, and Deputy Coroner M.S. Combs held an inquest yesterday over the remains. The jury returned a verdict of death from hemorrhage of the lungs. The burial will take place to-day at Mt. Olivet."[10]
