Biography

Benjamin Corley was born about 1832 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Benjamin was the son of Nathaniel Corley.

Benjamin, age 18, appears in the 1850 Federal census in the household of his father, Nathaniel Corley in Edgefield County, South Carolina.[1]

Benjamin's father died on the 8th of April, 1855 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Benjamin is named as a son of Nathaniel Corley in the petition filed with the Edgefield County, South Carolina court which reads in part as follows: ". . . The humble petition of the undersigned Burdett Corley showeth that Nathaniel Corley being a resident of the said District died intestate on the 8th day of April instant, possessed in his own right of a personal estate of value, and leaving as the distributees of his estate his nine children to wit Elizabeth wife of Sampson Corley of Barnwell District, West Corley, Jemima wife of Josiah Padgett, your petitioner Burdett Corley, Thomas Corley, Wilborn Corley, Benjamin Corley, Sarah Ann wife of Manchester Padgett, and John Corley, and his two grand children Martha Padgett, and Henry Padgett children of his pre-deceased daughter Susan, who was the wife of the said Manchester Padgett, which said John Corley Martha Padgett, and Henry Padgett are infants within the age of twenty one years. . . ."[2]

Benjamin died the 25th of May, 1855 in Edgefield County, South Carolina. Benjamin's brother filed the following petition for letters of administration as Benjamin was not married and his only heirs were is brothers and sisters. The petition reads as follows: "South Carolina Edgefield District - To Henry T. Wright Esq Ordinary - The petition of Burdett Corley showeth that Benjamin Corley late of the district and state aforesaid, departed this life intestate on or about the ___ day of ____ A.D. 1855, siezed and possessed in his own rights of a personal estate of considerable value that the heirs at law and distributees of the said Benjamin are his brothers and sisters, and your petitioner is desirous that letters of administration upon the estate of the said Benjamin should be granted to him upon the usual terms - and your petitioner will ever pray & C"[3]

Benjamin's obituary appeared in the Edgefield Advertiser as follows: "Died, in this District, on the 25th of May last, in the 23d year of age, Mr. Benjamin Corley, another son of Nathaniel Corley, Esq., dec'd. He was a young man of high promise, honorable and noble in his bearing towards all with whom he was acquainted, and consequently admired and loved by all. He became a lively member of the Baptist Church in 1854, on profession of faith, in which relation he lived and adorned the same until his death. Mr. C. told the writer on his death bed that he was happy in view of death in the love and favor of God. A numerous train of relations and friends remember him in love and high esteem as a friend and Christian. A.M.G."[4]
