Biography

Obituary: Attorney W.A. Corley was born July 27, 1881 in Paris, Ark., died June 10, 1939 at his home in Stilwell following an illness of about three years. He had been confined to his home for the past three weeks. He came to Stilwell in 1906 from Paris, Ark. Here he became a power in republican politics and directed that party's campaigns for over 30 years. Judge Corley served longer perhaps as an Adair county official than any other man. In 1910, he was elected county judge and was reelected in 1912. After an interval of 22 years he was again elected in 1934 for one term. He also was Adair county attorney for six years from 1926 to 1932.

On June 18, 1916, he was married to Miss Anna Taylor of this city. He was a member of the First Baptist church here. In addition to his leadership in the political field Judge Corley was active in many civic enterprises.

Judge Corley is survived his widow and one son, Richard Corley, student at Oklahoma A & M college, both are of Stilwell; four brothers, Rufus Corley of Kansas City, Will Corley of Hope, Ark., Carl Corley of Paris, Ark., and Henry Corley of Gore, Okla.; and five sisters, Mrs. Missouri Lee of Phoenix, Arizona, Mrs. Emma Lee of Langley, Okla., Mrs. Lena Hill and Mrs. Vergie Holmes, both of Ratcliff, Ark., and Mrs. Ruby Poindexter of Ft. Smith, Ark.

Pallbearers included members of the Adair county bar, W.A. Woodruff, Joe M. Lynch, John A. Goodall, E.G. Carroll, W.H. Martin, E.B. Arnold, W.L. Chase, R.Y. Nance, H.T. Williams, and Pete Helton. The Democrat joins with the many friends of the grief-stricken family in extending our deepest sympathy to the relatives of the deceased.
