Gráinne was a daughter of the High King, Cormac Ulfada MacArt.

Gráinne was promised in marriage to Fionn Mac Cumhaill, but at their wedding feast she fell for one of the Fianna, Diarmuid Ua Duibhne and they ran away pursued by Fionn. The lovers were helped by the Fianna, and eventually Fionn makes his peace with them. When Diarmuid was gored on a boar hunt, Fionn failed to use his power of healing to help Diarmuid who died. Some stories say that Gráinne and Fionn Mac Cumhaill were reconciled, others have different endings.
