Biography

Catherine Corman's exact birthdate is uncertain. Her age has only been recorded in once source, the 1851 Census of Saltfleet Township (Wentworth County, Canada West (Ontario)). The Census taker first of all wrote down what appears to have been 93 and then superimposed 88 (I think) over it. It is difficult to make out. The age of 88 in 1851 would place her birth about 1763.[1] Her father was Hans Johannes Jerrick Korman (Kornmann, aka George Cornman), her mother was Sarah (daughter of Benjamin Harrison).

- may have been born in Frederick, Maryland

In 1786 she married John Yeager, Jr. in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. Catherine's father came to Canada prior to 1793 when he was given an UEL land grant [Lots 21 & 22, Conc. III] in Saltfleet Township, Wentworth County, Upper Canada (Ontario).

John and Catherine followed a few years later, c. 1797-98. Over time his name was anglicised to "John Yeager" (although there are umlauts used as late as 1812). He is also recorded as Yager.

Marriage
Husband: Johannes Jager
Wife: Catherine Corman
Marriage Date: 1786[2]
Children:
  1. John Yeager
  2. Sarah Jager
  3. Abraham Jager
  4. Hannah Yeager

By 1803 it appears they were tenants in Saltfleeet. In 1810 John purchased a farm in Binbrook Twp., Wentworth, a few miles to the south. There was some difficulty later owning to the roughness of surveys in those days. Eventually 200 acres were properly granted to him. He also seems to have had a small holding in Saltfleet.

In 1819, aged 62, he sold off the Binbrook property to his son-in-law, Peter B. Kelly for a nominal five pounds. He quickly sold it.

John Yeager died 31 Jan. 1828 and was buried in a corner opposite his son, John Jr.'s farm (it became the Felker Family Cemetary). Catherine lived with John Jr. at his Saltfleet farm. She was still there for the 1851 Census, but the true date of her passing is unknown
