During his lifetime, he went by the nickname "Lanson."

Lanson was killed while working at a local quarry on December 19, 1909 in Marion, Virginia, when his five children were still very young. Marvin Denton Cormany, the younger of his two sons was only five years old, and Ruby, the youngest, was only eight months old. His widow Bertie never remarried, and died on August 15, 1966 at the age of 89, fifty-seven years after Lanson's death.
