Biography

Zephirin Cormier, son of Elisee Cormier and Marie Christine Johnson, was born on 13 February 1825 in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, United States. He was baptized on 8 May 1825 at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Grand Coteau. His godparents were Andre Robin and Therese Johnson. Father Jean Rosti performed the ceremony.[1]

He married Azeline Lanclos, daughter of Alexandre Lanclos Jr. and Marie Azeoline Bergeron, in Opelousas, St. Landry Parish. They obtained a license there on 5 October 1848,[2] and their marriage on 17 October 1848 was recorded at St. Landry Catholic Church.[3][4]

Children of Zephirin and Azeline:
  1. Marie Celimene Cormier, b. 31 Jul 1849[5][6]
  2. Anaclet Cormier, b. 29 Nov 1850,[7] d. 20 Sep 1861[8]
  3. Marie Selima Cormier, b. 20 Nov 1853[9]

The couple was enumerated with their infant daughter on the 1850 census, in St. Landry Parish.[10] Azeline apparently died between 1853-1855.[11]

He married second Marie [Marguerite] Edvine [Edvise, Edvige] Chautin, widow of Placide Marks, on 17 October 1855 in Opelousas.[12][13] The marriage was very short-lived, as she died within a few months as noted by the filing of her succession in July 1856.[14] No children are known of this marriage.

Zephirin married a third time, to Marie Sydonise Bergeron, in a civil ceremony in Opelousas. Their license was dated 9 August 1859,[15][16] and they were married before a Justice of the Peace on 22 August 1859.[17]

One child of Zephirin and Sydonise:[18]
  1. Marie Emelie Cormier, b. 9 Nov 1860[19][20]

Zephirin and Sydonise were enumerated in the household of Isaac N. Willingham during the 1860 census in Opelousas. Zephirin was a Planter who owned $500 worth of real estate, and had $300 in personal property.[21] In 1870, they were in their own household with their daughter, and two young men attending school.[22] By 1880, their daughter was married and gone, and they had an orphaned boy named Marius Cormier (probably a relative) living with them.[23]

Nearly 30 years after their civil marriage, Zephirin and Sydonise had their marriage solemnized in the church on 14 March 1888 at Arnaudville.[24]

Their 1900 household was filled with grandchildren and other relatives.[25]

Zephirin died by 10 November 1907, when he was buried in the St. Francis Regis Cemetery in Arnaudville.[26] His succession was filed on 17 June 1908 at the Opelousas courthouse.[27]

Research Notes

1866 Tax Assessment. "Zephirin Cormier" appears on a May 1866 tax assessment list. The list is described as an "Annual list of income and licenses." His assessment was recorded on 3 May 1866, where his location was given as Gros Chevreuil. He was taxed on $425 income and one carriage, for a total of $22.25 in tax.[28]

Burial. A broken piece of a headstone at Saint Francis Regis Cemetery in Arnaudville may indicate where Zepherin was buried. The only thing legible on the stone is "Zephri- Cormi- Bo-". It sits loosely on top of an old otherwise unmarked tomb. Church records show he was buried in this cemetery. It's possible this stone could be for another man with the same name, but most likely this stone was his.[29]
