Biography

Private Dominique Cormier served in the Canadian Army in World War I

He is the son of Edouard Gregoire Cormier and Pelagie LeBlanc. He was born in 1892. [1] [2] [3][4]

In the 1901 census Dominique (age 9) was living in Saint-André, Westmorland, New Brunswick, with his parents and siblings.[5]

Dominique lost his father in 1909 when he was only 16 years of age. His brother Olivier became head of the household at age 25. In the 1911 census, Dominique (age 18), was listed as a farmer and a lumberjack, living with his brother Olivier, his widowed mother, and brother Stanislas (named Louis in the census) in St Andre, New Brunswick.[6]

In the 1921 census Dominique (age 28), after his return from war, was head of the household in St-André, and listed as a farmer. Living with him were his mother Pélagie and a five-year-old adopted child named Emile Cormier. [7]

Dominique and Mélida were married in 1926. [8]

In the 1931 census Dominique (age 38), and Mélida (age 33) were living in Robichaud Office, with their children Ulysse (age 3) and Rita (age 2). Dominique worked as a butcher. [9]

He died in 1978 at the age of 85. [2] [3]

Dominique Cormier

Le 7 novembre 1917, Dominique s’est rendu à Shédiac pour s’enrôler dans la Première Guerre mondiale. Il a déclaré sur son formulaire de demande qu’il était célibataire, vivait à St. André avec sa mère et qu’il était un fermier. Il était alors âgé de 25 ans, mesurait 5 pieds 6 pouces et pesait 125 livres. Son examen médical a révélé qu’il était en bonne santé et il a été officiellement enrôlé dans le service militaire le 23 janvier 1918. Son salaire était 20.00 $ par mois.

R.M.S. Melita

Le 18 février 1918, il a embarqué sur le R.M.S. Melita à Halifax et a débarqué à Liverpool le 4 mars après une traversée qui a duré 15 jours.

Lors de son passage à Halifax, il aura sûrement pu voir les dommages causés par l’explosion d’un bateau dans le port d’Halifax deux mois plus tôt. Il y avait eu 1963 morts, 9000 blessés, et une grande partie de la ville avait été détruite.


Son dossier militaire ne fait aucune mention de l’endroit et de la durée de son entraînement militaire. Il a premièrement été assigné au “1st Depot Battalion, New Brunswick Regiment” et par après transféré au 26e bataillon du Nouveau-Brunswick. Environ 6000 hommes venant d’un peu partout dans la province ont fait parti de ce bataillon entre 1914 et 1918.

Dominique a été blessé au genou droit le 22 septembre 1918 alors que son régiment combattait dans le nord de la France près de Cambrai. Il a été évacué du champ de bataille et transporté a l’hôpital militaire du Camp Bramshott qui était situé près de Hampshire en Angleterre. Il est arrivé à cet hôpital le 27 septembre et y est demeuré pendant 56 jours.

Il a ensuite été transféré à la “1st Southern General Hospital” à Birmingham en Angleterre. Cet hôpital avait été formé en 1914 en convertissant une partie des bâtiments de l’Université de Birmingham pour soigner les blessés de guerre.

Il est demeuré dans cet hôpital pendant 15 jours. En tout, il a passé 71 jours dans ces deux hôpitaux avant d’être finalement remis de sa blessure.

H.M.S. Scotia

Il a embarqué sur le H.M.S. Scotia à Liverpool le 14 février 1919 et est arrivé à St-Jean au Nouveau-Brunswick au début mars. Il a été désactivé du service militaire le 18 mars 1919.
