Obituary

Polly Ann Cornett - Troublesome Creek Times Obituary Reprinted from Hindman News

"Aunt Polly Ann Combs left this world for the Great and Glorious Beyond on February 15, 1947. She had lived a long and useful life of more than 95 years in her community at Emmalena, KY., and before passing she remarked, "I am going happy and I don't mind to go." She had been a member of the Baptist Church for 58 years. She was born in this little community on Jan., 3, 1852. She was one of eleven children born to Nathanial and Lydia Caudill Cornett. She was the granddaughter of Uncle Billy Cornett, who served under General George Washington in the Revolutionary War. He came to Leatherwood, Perry County, KY., and settled after the surrender of General Cornwallis at Yorktown.

Aunt Polly's passing probably marks the last of the Revolutionary War grandchildren in this section of the country. She married Shade Combs in 1872. He passed on in 1888. To their wedlock were born eight children. One daughter, Nancy Combs, preceded her in death. She is survived by seven children: Joe Combs of Rowdy; Kathlene Combs, Milan Ind.; Lucille Bockway, Hindman; Mary Mosley, Hindman; John L. Combs, Lexington; Goodlow COMBS, Hazard; and Mrs. Robert Morgan, Emmalena, her oldest daughter, with whom she made her home for the past 21 years. She married Shade Smith in 1891. He died in 1931. Her family takes this opportunity to thank the many friends who were so kind and showed their love and respect for their beloved mother during her last days and passing."
