Biography

English Corney was born about 1804, probably in Sussex, England as he married Elizabeth Pennifold on the 6th December 1828 at St. Nicholas, Brighton, Sussex, England[1]

In 1831 they were living at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, England.

In September 1840, English was living with Mr. Wheatley, a respectable Wheelwright, at Kingston, Surrey, and on Thursday 11th September, left to go to Horsley near Guildford to procure some seasonal timber for his master. On Saturday 13th September, English supposedly went to Guildord market where he was employed to drive the cattle to Guildford market, English believeing the man Flint to be their owner. English was found in possession of the cattle and Flint later absconded when enquiries were made respecting them {the cattle}. (Flint was later tried, convicted and transported for another theft),[2]

On Saturday 13th September, English was committed to the prison at Guildford[2].

On the 16th September 1840 English was convicted of stealing four cattle in Newington, Surrey and sentenced to 15 years transportation to Van Diemen's Land[3][4]. He was transferred from Horsemonger Lane to the hulk Leviathan on t he 24th September 1840[5] .

English arrived at Van Diemen's Land on the 21st August 1841 on the ship "Asia" and was recorded as a wheelwright[6][7][8]

In August 1842 Elizabeth petitioned for her husbands sentence to be mitigated. She stated that at the time they had 5 children. Many people signed the petition stating that they had known English for several years and that he had an irreproachable character and had maintained himself and his family very respectably in his station of life.[2] . The petition must have been unsuccessful as his wife must have followed some time later, as they had children together in Australia.

He died at O'Brien's Bridge, Tasmania (now known as Genorchy) on the 16th of August, 1881.[9][10]

Research Notes

Although no baptism has been found for English Corney, the other children of John & Elizabeth Corney were baptised in non-conformist chapels.

Transfered from the profile of John Penfold : According to E J Colgates' Book "The Power and the Poverty Life in a Sussex Village 1790 - 1850". In 1833 English Corney was " the new Wheelwright back in the Village from Brighton . He bought a block of land and built a house and 2 workshops. He was married in Brighton to Elizabeth Penfold [ Pennifold ] 6 Dec 1828

Elizabeth AKA Eliza was the daughter of John Penfold and Francis Wolfe and was christened on the 25th Feb 1808 in Angmering. This is a small extract taken from a distant relatives Biography on English Corney and his family life[14]. NOTE added by Michelle Wilkes: English Corney's wife was NOT Eliza Penfold the daughter of John Penfold and Francis Penfold nee Wolfe bapt. 25th February at Angmering, Sussex as that John Penfold left a will naming the son in law John Donaldson, widower and grandchildren John, George, Eliza and Fanny Donaldson, children of his daughter Eliza Donaldson nee Penfold. Unfortunately the research used in the distant relative's biography is flawed as the person who wrote it was probably unaware of additional documentation ( i.e. the will of John Penfold and the petition of Elizabeth Corney nee Pennifold) and many online trees have just accepted the wrong information as fact.

It is likely that Eliza Pennifold was the daughter of Thomas, as her first child was named Thomas.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with English by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with English:
