He served in the 2nd Australian Imperial Force during the Second World War; enlisted 20th June 1942, discharged 20th February 1946.[2] He was a member of the 2/6th Australian Infantry Battalion, 17th Brigade, 6th Division. Robert joined his unit as it returned from the Middle East and prepared for the jungles of New Guinea. The 2/6th Battalion did not take part in the Kokoda Campaign, but defended Wau, and later participated in the Aitape-Wewak Campaign.[3] [4]
