Biography

William served as a Motor Machinist's Mate Third Class, U.S.S. LST-577, U.S. Navy during World War II.

He resided in Minnesota prior to the war. He enlisted in the Navy on September 15, 1943 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

LST-577 was hit by a torpedo fired from Japanese submarine RO-50 off the eastern coast of Mindanao causing the ship to brake into two sections.

The aft section sank immediately. 166 were lost including 100 U.S. Army passengers and 66 of the ships crew. The ship's commander, Lt. Carl H. Stahl, was one of those lost.

William was declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
