Biography

Maria "Marie" "Mary" (Phillipe) Cabral was born on the 24th of May 1880 in the Azores Islands, in Portugal. She migrated with her family to the islands of Hawai'i about 1883.[1]

Mary married Marion Cabral on the 25th of July 1897 in Hilo.[2] Her parents were listed as M. Phillippe and Maria, while his were listed as M. Cabral and L. Maria.[2] the witnesses to the blessed event were M. de Souza and M. de Fontes.[2] In 1900 they were living in Hilo, Hawai'i.[1] Marion, twenty-three, worked as a laborer while Mary, twenty-one, took care of little Antone and Josephine.[1] Mary had borne two children, with both still living.[1] The family was considerable larger in 1910, as they now had eight people in their home.[3] Marion, thirty-one, worked as a laborer at a stable.[3] Mary, twenty-nine,[3] was most likely kept busy with the children and the home. Antone (12) and Rose (10) attended school during the day, while Mary (8), Josephine (5), Chaudaline (3), and Marion (11 mos.) stayed at home.[3] Mary and Marion were both listed as born in Portugal with a migration year of 1883.[3] The children were all born in Hawaii.[3]

Mary and Marion lived in Onomea in 1920.[4] Marion, forty-three, worked as a laborer at a plantation stable.[4] Mary, forty-one, took care of the home and family.[4] Marion was listed as able to read and write, while Mary wasn't.[4] Both listed their immigration year as 1881.[4] Their daughters Mary (17) and Josephine (14) worked as laborers at a sugar plantation. Alice (13), Marion (10), Manuel (8) and Gloria (7) attended school.[4] Only Helen, almost two years old, stayed home all day.[4] Their son Antone lived two houses away with his wife, daughter, and in-laws.[4]

Marion had taken on a foreman position at a sugar plantation by 1930.[5] Mary, age fifty, could speak English and was listed as a naturalized citizen, as was Marion.[5] Their daughter Alice was a widow and brought her two-and-a-half year old daughter Ethel to live with her and her parents.[5] Their daughters Helen (12) and Gladys (9) were the only other children in the home.[5] Both attended school during the day.[5]

Mary was fifty-nine when the 1940 census was taken.[6] Marion, at sixty-two, was now an overseer at the sugar plantation.[6] Their daughter Gladys, nineteen, and grandson Richard, eight, were the only other people in the home.[6]

The 1950 census has yet to be released. It is the last one that Mary would appear in. Mary died on the 2nd of February 1953 at the age of seventy-two.[7] Her husband Mariano died five years later. Both were laid to rest in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Cemetery in Kalaoa, Hawaii.[8]
