Biography

Stewart was born 21 Jan 1894 in Sterling, Jackson, Iowa. He was the son of James Stewart Cotter and Lizzie Emma Day.[1]

In 1895 he was living in Jackson, Iowa.[2] The household included James Colter (sic) age 30, Lizzie Colter age 25 and Day Colter age 0, all born in Jackson County, Iowa.

In 1910 he was living in Union, Jackson, Iowa.[3] The household included James Cotter age 48, wife Lizzie Cotter age 40, son Day Cotter age 15, son Lyla Cotter age 14, son Russell Cotter age 4 and son James Cotter age 2, all born in Iowa. James listed no occupation. Lizzie was the mother of 4 children, all living.

He registered for the World War I draft in Jackson, Iowa.[4] He was single and was a college student.

Stewart Day Cotter and Viola Marjorie Kempter were married 26 Dec 1923 in Clinton County, Iowa.[5] She was the daughter of Michael Kempter and Anna Albright.

In 1930 he was living in East Lansing, Ingham, Michigan.[6] The household included Stewart D Cotter age 35 born in Iowa, wife Viola M Cotter age 33 born in Iowa and son William D Cotter age 5 born in Illinois. Stewart was a representative for a publishing company.

In 1940 he was enumerated in Ward 4, Milwaukee, Milwaukee City, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.[7] He was age 46 born in Iowa, married, and a lodger. He was a publishing salesman.

In 1940 he was also enumerated in Ward 20, Madison, Madison City, Dane, Wisconsin.[8] The household included Stewart Cotter age 46 born in Iowa, wife Viola Cotter age 43 born in Iowa and son William Cotter age 15 born in Illinois. Stewart was a salesman for a publishing company.

He registered for the World War II draft in Passmadison, Wisconsin.[9] He worked for Allyn and Bacon.

He died 5 Apr 1978 in Madison, Dane, Wisconsin.[10][11]

He is buried in Wautoma Union Cemetery, Wautoma, Waushara County, Wisconsin.[12]
