Biography

Mary was born in 1878 in Cloonanaha near Inagh, County Clare, Ireland, the daughter of William James 'Liam Ban' Cotter and Honora 'Norah' Barry. She grew up on the family farm there, but does not appear in the 1901 Irish Census: presumably she was working elsewhere. In 1902, Mary emigrated to America, joining her brother William in New York City. She worked as a house servant and chambermaid for private families in New York, though she does not seem to appear in the various censuses. She applied for citizenship and completed the process only in 1927. By that time, she had adopted Rose as her middle name. She died in the Bronx in 1936 at age 58 and is buried in Old St Raymond's Cemetery there.
