Biography

Michael was born in 1880 in Cloonanaha near Inagh, County Clare, Ireland, the son of William James Cotter and Honora 'Norah' Barry. As a young man, he initially continued to live and work on his parents' farm in Cloonanaha. When he was 22 years old in 1902, he emigrated to America to join his brother in New York City. By 1905, he was living with four of his siblings in Manhattan. He worked for the railway. In 1920, he married Margaret Slattery née Knowles at Holy Trinity in Manhattan. Margaret had two children by her first marriage. Michael and Margaret did not have children together. By 1930, they had moved to the Bronx where Michael had bought a house. He retired and in 1937 died there from heart disease. He is buried near his brother in Old St Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx, New York.
