Hellena Hayes Cotter (married name Keeling) was born on 4 February 1840 in Melbourne, New South Wales, Australia, the daughter of Inez Seville (Fitzgerald) Cotter and Barry Cotter.

She was christened on 11 June 1840 at St James, Melbourne.^[1]

She married Levitt John Joseph Keeling in 1867 in Victoria.^[2]
