Edward Cotter was the son of Michael Cotter and Catherine Dodd-Cotter
Edward was born on the 11th November, 1847 at Wheeo near Goulburn and christened by Fr. B. Walsh on 2nd March, 1848 at St Augustine's Roman Catholic Church, Yass, New South Wales.

His maternal grandfather Patrick DODD aged 34 was convicted of highway robbery. He was kept in the hulk “Essex” on 31.3.1829 after being tried in Dublin on 5.11.1828. He was deported to Australia on the “Guildford” leaving Dublin on 12.7.1829 & arriving on 4.11.1829. Ploughman assigned to Andrew Gibson, Goulburn Plains. T/L No. 38/709 C/P 46/376 in 1846.
However, his wife and family came out free: Ann - Catherine, Mary and Michael DODD came free on the “Roslyn Castle” from Cork on 28.10.1835 arriving 25.2.1836, while John, William & Richard DODD came free on the “Surrey” later in 1836.

In 1876 he married Mary Ann KELLY (1855-1926).
