Biography

Elizabeth Cottle was probably born c1764 in Augusta County, Virginia, from which Botetourt Co. formed in 1770 and from which Greenbrier Co. formed in 1778. The date of birth is estimated based on her mother's DOB and the date of her own marriage. She was the daughter of Uriah Cottle and Rebecca MNU.

She married John McGuire in Greenbriar County, Virginia on July 14, 1779.

Elizabeth Cottle McGuire died in Mason County, Virginia (now WVA) sometime between the 1820 census and 19 April 1825.

  • Augusta County, Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists, 1782-1795 (FHL 7846301); John McGuire recorded with 2 white males in 1791-1793 and, in 1794, Hugh McGuire appears in records for the first time, along with John (now with only 1 male above 16).
  • Bath County, Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists, 1791-1816 (FHL Film 7846305); John and Hugh McGuire are recorded in 1795-1796; John is recorded from 1799 -1804. The Barnett and Waugh families are also present during the same time frame - some of whom were sons-in-law of John and Elizabeth.
  • Macon County, West Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists, 1805-1850 (FHL Film 7857022); John is recorded from 1805 until 1819, the last year he is found as "John, Sr.". There was a John present in 1820-1825 but it is difficult to tell if that was John or his son, John. John's sons, and probably some grandsons, are also recorded during the same time frame.
  • Mason County, West Virginia Deed Book A, p. 204; 7 January 1806, John McGuire and Elizabeth, his wife, to William Barnet, 100 acres, beginning at a large sugar corner to the old Military survey, N33W 116 poles to a double white oak, S57W 12 poles to a white oak and double hickory, S12W 143 poles and 12 links to a black oak on a ridge, S35E 127 poles to a sugar, white oak and beech on the Military line, NE 160 poles to beginning. No wit. John and Elizabeth signed without marks.
  • Mason County, West Virginia Deed Book A, p. 206; 7 January 1806, John McGuire and Elizabeth, his wife, of Mason Co., Virginia to John McGuire Junior, for $1, 100 acres, being part of a Military survey sold to William Owens by Charles Lewis and by Owens sold to John McGuire Sr., beginning at a large sugar on the bank of Three Mile Creek and with the old Military survey S74E 56 poles to a white oak and hickory, leaving said line N8E 216 poles to a white oak, S57W 168 poles to a double white oak, S33E 116 poles to the beginning. No wit. John and Elizabeth signed without marks. Elizabeth relinquished dower. Note: Same land was sold by John McGuire Jr. and Nelly, his wife, 6 October 1807, to John Allen (Mason Co. DB B, p. 93).
  • 1810 Federal Census, Mason County, Virginia; John McGuire Sr., 2 males <10, 1 male >45, 2 females <10, 1 female 26-44, 1 female >45.
  • Mason County, West Virginia Deed Book C, p. 216; 28 March 1814, John McGuire and Elizabeth, his wife, to Isaiah Steele, for $1, 63 ½ acres on Threemile Creek, where John McGuire now lives, beginning at a sugar on the side of a hill below the house of said McGuire and on the north side of the creek, on the dividing line of McGuire and heirs of John Allen, decd., Wit: Robert McKee, John Harris, John Thornton. Elizabeth relinquished dower. John and Elizabeth signed without marks.
  • 1820 Federal Census, Mason County, Virginia; John McGuire, 1 male >45, 1 female >45.
  • Mason County, West Virginia Deed Book F, p. 245; 19 April 1825, Hugh McGuire and Elizabeth, his wife, Samuel McGuire and Eleanor, his wife, and John McGuire and Nelly, his wife, all of Mason Co., to Robert Barnet; 43 acres on Threemile Creek, whereas John McGuire Sr., late of Mason Co., died seized and possessed of a small tract on Threemile Creek, conveyed to him by Charles Lewis and Juliet G. Lewis 7 May 1805, part of 306 ½ acres; and since John McGuire Sr. died intestate leaving the parties of the first part as heirs in part and each entitled to one eighth part of the 43 acres.
