William was born 6 Jan 1897 at Lissan Demesne, County Londonderry, Ireland. He was the son of William Cotton of Lissan, and Isabella Mooney. ^[1]

As of 1901 the family lived at Tatnagilta, County Tyrone.

As of 1911 he and brother James were orphans at Muller's Orphan Houses, Ashley Down, Bristol, England. ^[2]

On 27 Jul 1918 at the Magherafelt registry office, he married Rachel Park of Caneese, daughter of Andrew Park. He lived in Lissan Demesne at the time. ^[3]

They lived at Caneese, Lissan afterwards. ^[4]

The family emigrated to New Zealand in March 1928 aboard the Ionic. ^[5]

He passed away 11 Jan 1962 age 65. ^{[6] [7]} He is buried at Feilding Cemetery, plot 454b block 2, with wife Rachel. He was an undertaker. ^[8]
