Biography

Willie was born July 11, 1902, on a farm in Comanche County, Texas, near Fleming and Gustine. She passed away in Amarillo, Texas, April 6, 1993.

The family lived and farmed in that community all of her life. She attended schools in Newburg, Texas.

She married Arla Edward Hallford on June 10, 1922, in Blanket, Brown County, Texas. They had a friend there that they wanted to perform the service.

Willie and Arla both attended Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas. He graduated and became a school teacher and superintendent. She became a housewife, but sometimes did substitute teach.

They had four daughters and the family lived in Grosvenor (north of Brownwood), Jermyn, and Jacksboro. When Arla took a job with the State in about 1940, they moved to Quanah, Texas.

In about 1951, Arla and Willie and two daughters moved to Amarillo, Texas, where he was head of the welfare agency for the region.

In 1960, they moved to Eastland, Eastland County, Texas, to be nearer his elderly mother in Comanche County. They continued to live there in retirement until they could no longer maintain a home and moved to Amarillo, Texas, to be near their daughters.

Throughout their lives, they were devout Baptists and taught Sunday School and she played piano for the church some. She was an excellent seamstress and quilter. She painted some in her younger years. She was a gracious hostess and an excellent cook.
